Artist narrative

Phalla was born on April 15, 1976 in Kampong Spew Province and developed an early appreciation for nature inspired artworks. His innate talent led him to the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh, earning himself a diploma in Traditional Painting and Interior Design.

The rigorous training in the university helped him develop an appreciation for capturing the minutest details of a subject. Nature, specifically the orchid flower and insects, was the subject of his first collection of oil paintings for the Arts Lounge. There is something sensual, provocative and powerful about his work. It evokes the spirit of Georgia O’ Keefe, the American painter best known for painting flowers that synthesized abstraction and representation. O’ Keefe’s paintings present crisply contoured forms that are replete with subtle tonal transitions of varying colors. Often she transformed her subject matter into powerful abstract images. Phalla on the other hand renders his work in a way that enhances the colour with an almost plastic sheen in certain light. There is the suggestion of hyperrealism and the composition hinting at certain lyricism. It’s as if he was in a meditative state when he was doing the paintings.

Phalla exhibited at Gallery X-EM Design, Phnom Penh in 2008. He is currently finishing a mural painting for a temple outside Phnom Penh.
